Iowa Academy Statement on the lived experiences in relation to race-based oppression

The Board and Council from the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recognizes the traumas of our Black communities in light of the unanimous guilty verdict of Derek Chauvin in the murder of George Floyd.

In this time of healing for many in our community, we encourage practicing compassion both inside and outside of practice. Especially as last year’s trauma is re-lived through the recent death of Daunte Wright.

And as we hope that we can move toward a space of peace and collective betterment, our organization continues to condemn actions of racially charged violence. We urge systemic reform in systems of oppression in our professional, local, state, and national communities.

We challenge professionals in our organization to continue their learning to understand others’ lived experiences in relation to race-based oppression. As a result, we can continue striving toward making dietetics an inclusive space for all.
