Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Support the Black Lives Matter Movement

Updated: Mar 30

The Board and Council from the Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics support the Black Lives Matter movement and take a knee in solidarity with those protesting police brutality. The Iowa Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics condemns the practice of racial profiling, racist ideologies deeply rooted in our culture, and systemic prejudice prevalent in our governing bodies. We denounce the murder of unarmed Black/African Americans as a result of these unjust practices. As a profession dedicated to health and well-being through positive nutrition, we acknowledge inequities in nutrition exist, in part, because of these racist policies and practices. In order for us to best aid diversity in our communities, we need to support and encourage diversity in our profession. The Iowa Academy believes representation matters, and change starts with us.  We stand beside our members who identify as Black/African American, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC). As a professional community, we do not support the systemic inequities within the United States leading to racial and ethnic disparities in health and nutrition. We also recognize our organization’s own shortfalls in diversity and inclusion among our Iowa leadership. Our members, and the diverse communities they represent, are important to us.  We would also like to take this moment to apologize. We apologize to our members for not acknowledging the injustices faced by BIPOC communities sooner. We regret our silence; we should have publicly shown our support far earlier. As a professional organization in Iowa, we have not done our part to create an environment embracing inclusion and encouraging diversity among our volunteers. Adequate representation is important to reflect the diverse communities and cultures we serve. At this, we have failed. This must change.  Our first step toward creating a more inclusive environment involves participating in a Call to Action set forth by the DPG, MIG, and Affiliate Leaders of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In this document, these leaders outline steps the Academy can take toward building inclusive representation and eradicating racial and ethnic injustices in the nutrition profession. At the end of this document, Iowa Academy members can add their signature in support of more equitable representation and diversification.
